Trileptal during pregnancy?

Mon, 08/21/2006 - 11:54
I am about four months pregnant with my first child. Ever since my pregnancy started, I have been having many, many more seizures (mostly in the morning). My doctor keeps increasing my dose of Trileptal. I'm up to 3000 mg a day, but I am still getting them. I'm worried about the effect on the baby. Has anyone been on Trileptal during their pregnancy and was the baby okay? Thanks for any advice I can get.

My name is Brandi and I have epilepsy.

I am not trying to scare you, only to make you aware.

In my case, my daughter had a brain hemorrhage 17 hours after birth.  The doctor I had did not communicate to me that I needed to be taking vitaman K, to prevent bleeding in the baby, in the last trimester of my preganacy.  This is something that every pregnant mother on seizure medication needs to be aware of.  I had many seizures during my pregnancy also, but they seemed to get better towards the end of my pregnancy.  I was on depakote for the first two months and then they changed me to trileptal and dilantin.  I also have tonic-clonic seizures.  It was a very odd combination and I am going to be more aware this time.  I am trying again this summer.  I am nervous, what happened to Isabelle (my daughter) was heart breaking, it could have been prevented.

Hi Sj, I am 2 months pregnant but I am not taking Trileptal. I am on tegretol and Lamictal. I just know that they are side effects but I have talked to some people on this site and they was on medication and had healthy babies. I've been reading up and women with epilepsy have a 90% chance of having a healthy baby. So dont work yourself up too much. Stress will hurt the baby also. I have been having more seizures also. I am trying not to take more though. I am scared also. Good luck with everything and I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers. heather
