Corpus Callosotomy Sugery

Tue, 06/20/2006 - 12:39
My 8 yr old son has intractable epilepsy. He is severely developmentally delayed and three seizures meds plus the VNS. The latest "treatment" the doctors want to try is corpus callosotomy. I would like to hear from anyone who has had this surgery or child has had it. His doctors are in Atlanta. Thank you so much! Trese

Hey Trese, My son's name is Nick and he had a full corpus callosotomy 13 years ago. He had intractable seizures, multiple meds and was having 20 "drop" seizures a day. His doctor is at CHOA Scottish Rite. He too, is severely developmentally delayed. Because he was so young when the surgery happened I will never know what it might have done to his future development. But we didn't notice any difference in his abilities at the time. Also, this COMPLETELY stopped those kind of seizures! Not all of his seizures mind you, but the fully involved drop kind. And it is still working to this day. He recently had video eeg done for possible VNS (which he had done today!) and it clearly showed that while his seizures fully involved the entire side of the brain, they stop there and don't spread to the other side, no matter which side it starts on. The only bad thing from the surgery is that he ended up with a shunt. We are not sure if this was a complication from the surgery or just a progression of his original problems. I don't know if this helps at all but you are welcome to email me if you want to ask more questions. Good luck to you and God bless you! Tater's Mom

Hello there!

My son is 5 this year and we are also considering the above surgery.  The doctor told us that the surgery doesn't quite reduce seizure activtity but I read otherwise from your entry and also from other information.  Hence, I am so happy for Nick and your family to read that his horrid drop seizures have stopped completely.

 Could you please share on:

1. whether there were any obvious negative side effects to Nick after the surgery, e.g., coordination? The doctor mentioned that to me.

2. How long was the recovery period?

3. Did Nick have to go through intense physiotherapy and occupational therapy after surgery?

Would appreciate your sharing.

 Cheers, Karen

Could someone please discuss a callosotomy with me.   We have been told that my 8 year old needs that surgery.   E-mail at newborn1000@yahoo.com or newbornbk@yahoo.com.  We would appreciate any information about the procedure and recovery and your experiences/results.
