question about simple partial seizures

Sat, 08/30/2008 - 12:13

I have a question about simple partial seizures. I've had epilepsy for 13 yrs, with complex partial seizures at least 5 per month. But thankfully I was able to have right temporal lobe surgery done in August of '07, and thus far I have been seizure free! But my question is this, Recently about once or twice a month, i will get very nauseas at my stomach, usually before sleeping, or waking up because of it. I'm aware of everything and it will pass quickly. Could this possibly be a simple partial seizure? I should know all this by heart, since i would have Auras before i would have a complex partial. But then again, wasnt the Auras themselves, simple partials? I am very grateful for having surgery done. It has truely given me a better quality of life. I know there is always a slight "chance" that breakthrough seizures can happen. Dont get me wrong, because if this feeling is that possiblity, I will take it anyday over the ones that i used to have before surgery! "IF" this is. I dont like to think it, but i know in my heart that it could possibly be. I know we arent doctors, but, what do you think?

Thanks, Becky

I forgot to add that they arent bothersome. Just wondering?

I know how you feel. I had complex partial seizures and had surgery in 2000 to remove a tumor. I have been seizure free since.  About 2003 I was at school and got an aura. I panicked thinking oh god as I remember everytime I had an aura I would go unconscious seconds later but I never did go unconscious. I am averaging about 8 auras a year now. Its something we just have to live with , and its even scarier as you associate it with the past before surgery. My neurologist told me I would be getting them for the rest of my life and chance of a complex partial seizure is very low. I hope i gave you some confidence. My auras btw are much different than before my surgery. They are a very euphoric feeling I actually like the feeling of mine. Have you ever had an aura you liked the feeling of?  And yes auras are simple partial seizures

Thank you so much for your replies:)

I do feel better knowing that i am not the only one who feels this after surgery. My auras before used to be a deja vu feeling. When i first started having auras, before i was told i had epilepsy, and before i knew that it was a seizure, it felt kinda neat, in a way. Then after i had my first seizure after i had one, a grand mal, back in 1991, they started turning into fear. It was then that i would have complex partial seizures afterwards. So now i get just a little nervous, because it does make me remember the "before". But, like i've said, i'll take it anyday over what i used to have.

Thanks again! Becky

You are exactly right that the auras are the simple partial seizures.  I also had a similiar situation.  I had surgery about 4 1/2 years ago to help with complex partials and it definitely helped.  About two months however I started having auras quite frequently, almost to the point that they are coming daily.  My doctors are concerned that my seizures are changing, I was told that tha can happen as we age.  So that is concerning, but I guess I was used to the having them compex seizures before the surgery and dealing with simple now are almost a piece of a cake, although they can be bothersome at times, it just depends on how many my I have in a day.  I am to take Larazapan if I have multiple ones during a specific time frame to try and stop them from breaking through the other medicine that I am taking.  So just watch how your body is reacting to the start of the partials.  Hopefully things will be positive for you.
