All Roker joke, over the line?

Wed, 08/01/2007 - 11:05
I have been a little under the weather lately due to med changes, so i just heard this. I just came across an article about Al Roker of the Today Show (07/07/07). It said he made an epileptic joke regarding a story about the new Olympic logo. I am not sure if links are allowed here but here it goes. http://newsbusters.org/node/13425 If the link get deleted google "roker joke" it should come up top of page. IMHO i feel it you are epileptic it is OK to tell epileptic jokes amongst fiends. It relieves the tension. Other people do not have to be worried about being PC (I.E. "i didn't get any sleep last night, my baby was throwing a fit".) Was Al out of line? Am i out line?

:/ That was really insensitive of him. I think the issue is that most people seem to regard epilepsy as some kind of temporary problem merely associated with flashing lights/patterns. The percentage of people with epilepsy who are actually photosensitive is relatively small if I'm not mistaken, so it's a matter of misinformation. I dunno. On one hand, I can understand that he's not epileptic and he's just ignorant of the issues associated with epilepsy. On the other hand, is ignorance really a good excuse for insensitivity? Imagine if somebody made an AIDS or breast cancer joke. They'd get fired; jeez.

The newsbusters article

The newsbusters article (actually they should be called "news we choose to bust that fits our agenda") was a good one. His statements about that Imus boob could be completely made back towards him. So what to do? I thought about a "taser Al Roker in the face challenge!!!" what with him being the compassionate fellow he is and all, surely he would like to go all out and discover what it is like to have Epilepsy. Ok, I kid....just joking as he was. This incident was a good thing, along the cliched' lines of "no press is bad press". Good to get word out that yes, people do have epilepsy..and no, it isn't fun. There is a ton of work to be done and getting word out, whatever it takes to do so...can't hurt much outside of feelings..I know mine were hurt for a 1/2 sec. then I realized I can't let dopey guys like him get me down!!!
