Weight

Does anyone have problems with their weight due to certain medications they are taking for epilepsy?I have reached an all time high with my weight and my neurologist says my medication contributes to it. I am taking Diamox 500mg twice daily, Lamictal 200mg twice daily, Zanaflex 4mg at night and hormones (Premarin 2.50 mg once daily) due to having a hysterectomy.I thought medications like Diamox were supposed to help with weight loss...maybe the combinations of medications might throw that idea out the window??I move around a lot...I have to because I look after my mother 24/7 because she can barely walk anymore. I don't think it's lack of exercise.I've got to lose weight...anyone have any ideas on that also? Thanks all.

Hi. Yep. The seizure drugs can make you blow up like a blimp. I gained weight with all of them. I was on (at one time or another,) dilantin, phenobarbatol, depakote, tegratol, neurontin, topamax, keppra, lamictol, gabitral, zonagran, and others that I can't recall. I saw the most significant increase of weight when I was on depakote. Weight gain isn't surprising when you consider that the drugs change the body's metabolism. As for exercise, just do it. Examine what you are eating as well. High fats (of the wrong kind,) and too much carbs will blow you up. Stay away from the junk food. Drink plenty of H20. The water will help flush the toxins from your system. The H20 helps with a lot of things. I drink plent of it. H20 is good for the complexion of your skin and helps keep the kidneys filtered too. I hope this sheds some light on the subject for you. Linda.

there is a wrong kind of carb too..the sugary kind...besides those, carbs are good for you and if you restrict your carbs too much u won't have energy to actually excercise. actually, my metabo runs pretty well with one-a-day weight smart multivitamin and i take cayenne pepper supplement also for metabolism which works well also. you'd have to ask your doc if those things are ok to take with your meds. i've been told for most people, the antiseizure drugs don't make them gain weight. is this actually a sack of bull crap, because with how many of you seem to have gained weight with them..? makes me consider not taking meds even if they prescribe them..i don't want to be an overweight personal trainer/distance runner/triathlete..still have a little ways to go to get into the fitness field and I am not giving that up because of a pill... i still haven't ditched my modeling ideas either..even if this turns out to be E, i am NOT letting my life get screwed up like that. i'll str8 up tell someone i ain't taking something that will make me huge..maybe that won't sit well with some people but oh well..also if you are going to be excercising and doing so strenously, please take in something with electrolytes. you don't need hyponatremia, i've been through that mess already and it got me to where I am now..there is a big debate going on on CoolRunning( web's biggest running site) where I am also an active member..someone else on there has experienced hyponatremia severly like I did and suffered a seizure and they have continued having them. It doesn't help that I injured my head on the way down. just be watchful of your electroltyes if u plan to excercise a lot....

Hi. Yea. You need some carbs. I think if I remember my science correctly the carbs actually help the body break down and utalize prortiens? You mentioned modeling so are you into fashion too? I believe that the AEDs make you gain weight. On the line of pepper did you know that black pepper oil is good for arthritus and joint pain? You have to mix the pepper oil with another buffer oil otherwise it will be too strong and burn the skin by itself.later. Linda.
