Psychic-Type Epilepsy?

Fri, 11/08/2013 - 11:54

Hi Community,

I just responded to another person's question with my story, but I decided to reach a larger group by posting myself.

I had a major gran mal a little more than a year ago. I thought it was my first, though I was 45 then. After many discussions with my wonder Mayo Clinic doctors, 2 EEG studies, and 2 MRIs, it is confirmed that I have had epilepsy all my life. One side of my hippocampus is shruken and scarred. Mesial Temporal Scelrosis, I believe it's called.

I had no seizures during either of my EEGs. So after the last one, I was given a surprising diagnosis: Epilepsy- Psychic Type. I had never heard of this before, and actually thought the doctor made it up to appease me, but it is real.

This is very hard for me to accept on the one hand, because I always thought my psychic abilities were a spiritual gift, not syptoms of a disease. One the other hand, I feel quite vindicated to know that I am not crazy, or mentally ill. I have since decided epilepsy and psychic ability don't have to be two different things. But it is hard for me to tell, when I am noticing a psychic event, if that is an aura or not. I have never had a gran mal seizure while on a ghost hunt. I only have them while I am asleep on the couch, or perhaps at night. So are my psychic abilities themselves seizures? One doctor in my Mayo Clinic group thinks that, yes, these are seizures. Which means I am having seizures all day, every day, despite 1,000 mg's of Keppra a day.

Is there another person on this forum, or any doctor, who has any experience or knowledge of my particular diagnosis?

Thanks

Thank you all for responding. I am glad to hear that others have shared my experiences. I know the doctors can't answer our questions, because they just don't know yet. But after a lifetime of experiencing psychic ability that is very strong, I have no doubt that it is real. I can't tell you how many times I have had precognitive dreams. Some of them were so realistic, in one instance, I called my friend to tell her I was sorry that her cat had died. She asked me what I was talking about, because her cat was fine, sitting right next to her. But later she called back, hysterical, saying the same cat had been killed by a car. She wanted to know how I had known before it happened. Other times, I might have a terrible feeling for days or weeks, with no explanation. One time I mentioned to my daughter that I was having awful dreams about a huge wave, We lived in Seattle at the time, and I was afraid there would be a tsnaumi.  Two weeks later, the huge tsnaumi that stuck Indonesia and all across Asia, killing at least 250,000 people happened. Since I didn't know yet that I had seizures in my sleep, I did not make the connection that these were possibly seizures that were causing the precognitive ability.

Now that I do know I have seizures in my sleep, I am often afraid to fall asleep. All the gran mals I have known about in the last year since I was diagnosed occured while I was napping during the day. Now I am trying to figure out if getting sleepy in the day is an aura for me. Or maybe taking the nap lowers the seizure threashold?

I do know now that I have a cracked jaw (TMJ) from seizures in my sleep at night.  Previously, it was explained by stress.

Besides dreaming, I have all kinds of abilities psychically. I think all people do, but don't access it for some reason or another. I am glad to have Epilepsy if it gives me a special talent. I would not have it operated away unless my seizures become much worse then they are now. SO far, no medication has caused me to stop having the psychic experiences. But going off anti depressants for a week once gave me intense ability, to the point that it had to stop or I would have gone insane.

Please continue to respond. I welcome individual discussions if you can tellme how to contact you. (I can't dream up your email address!)

Hi,

Hi, I'm newly officially diagnosed with temporal lobe seizures, though I was diagnosed with "benign myoclonus" and "weird migraines" several years ago and was treated for seizures with low dose anti-seizure meds, but I believe I've had seizures since childhood. Since at least my teenage years I've had psychic visions, mostly in my sleep. Since starting higher dose seizure meds and currently having up to 5 seizures daily, I'm having waking visions. Some are spot on and some require a little interpretation. I've always attributed it to my indian heritage. Ya know..."the gift" lol. I recently freaked a friend out when I woke up early one morning and called her to tell her she was getting married. She told me not to even joke about such a thing. That was December 27. On Feb 26 she announced that she was engaged. All of the blood drained from her face when I reminded her that I dreamed it was coming. I'm glad to know that I'm not schizophrenic for thinking this is a real thing. Thank you guys for sharing this.

I'm 23 and last week this

I'm 23 and last week this started with the dreams that come true. They are very specific situations: acquaintances that I barely know doing exactly in real life what they did in my dream that ended up leading to me and my boyfriend breaking up (both in my dream and in reality the next day), my friend getting in a fender bender the day after I dreamed it, my boss getting angry about a specific comment someone made (whom I've never met), and then the next day my boss told me that this person had made the same comment to her and she had the same reaction as in my dream. Then last night something strange happened. I've been told that I jerk around in my sleep and grind my teeth since I was a child. Last night was different. While dreaming, I heard this loud, unbearable ringing that would fluctuate in volume like a siren. The louder it got the heavier my body and the tighter my jaw would clench. It was uncontrollable. This kept coming in about 3-4 waves of the loud ringing and increasing my inability to move as the ringing got louder simultaneously - all while asleep. I don't know what to do. This has never happened to me before. Every single dream I have had in the past week has come true. It's not deja vu, and I've never had a dream where I've felt something so physical and heard something so loud that obviously wasn't there - my roommate didn't hear anything.
