Psychic-Type Epilepsy?

Fri, 11/08/2013 - 11:54

Hi Community,

I just responded to another person's question with my story, but I decided to reach a larger group by posting myself.

I had a major gran mal a little more than a year ago. I thought it was my first, though I was 45 then. After many discussions with my wonder Mayo Clinic doctors, 2 EEG studies, and 2 MRIs, it is confirmed that I have had epilepsy all my life. One side of my hippocampus is shruken and scarred. Mesial Temporal Scelrosis, I believe it's called.

I had no seizures during either of my EEGs. So after the last one, I was given a surprising diagnosis: Epilepsy- Psychic Type. I had never heard of this before, and actually thought the doctor made it up to appease me, but it is real.

This is very hard for me to accept on the one hand, because I always thought my psychic abilities were a spiritual gift, not syptoms of a disease. One the other hand, I feel quite vindicated to know that I am not crazy, or mentally ill. I have since decided epilepsy and psychic ability don't have to be two different things. But it is hard for me to tell, when I am noticing a psychic event, if that is an aura or not. I have never had a gran mal seizure while on a ghost hunt. I only have them while I am asleep on the couch, or perhaps at night. So are my psychic abilities themselves seizures? One doctor in my Mayo Clinic group thinks that, yes, these are seizures. Which means I am having seizures all day, every day, despite 1,000 mg's of Keppra a day.

Is there another person on this forum, or any doctor, who has any experience or knowledge of my particular diagnosis?

Thanks

My neurologist explained to

Submitted by Laura42 on Fri, 2017-09-22 - 12:47
My neurologist explained to me that my seizures are causing brain damage and scarring, the brain has a unique ability to remap itself and so it causes me to tap into another, less used area of the brain and that is probably where my psychic abilities come from. Also, I have brain damage from a car accident. I have never seen my abilities as a gift, I usually know when someone is going to die before it happens...my son for instance. I knew for a month before I lost him that he was going to die. I kept seeing him being brought home in a body bag. I always thought, "If this is a gift from God, what kind of God would do this to me?" I don't want to be tortured with images of horrible things before they happen, but the way my doctor explained it, made it more scientific and it was easier for me to accept. I also don't see my epilepsy as a disease. I think of it more like an injury that I have to learn to work around.

I get these Dejavu feelings.

I get these Dejavu feelings. Sometimes I can push through them but most of the time I have to be very still and can't talk. I feel a fear like no other. All I can't think is  that" I've been here before". I'm waiting for something bad to happen most of the time. And it's kinda like a movie is playing in my head but after it passes I can't remember. During these I get this tingly feeling behind my head and pretty much all over my body. I also have constant headaches. Is this anything like a seizure? I was told that I was just having flashbacks but they are almost happening on a daily basis. Sometimes up to 3 to 4 times a day.

i get this exact same thing.
