Did surgery affect your artistic abilities?

Fri, 02/09/2018 - 22:48
I have right side temporal mesial sclerosis. My neuro is discussing surgical options as I am running out of medications we can try. I am an artist. Did any of you who had surgery have and deficits in any artistic abilities that they had after having surgery? We are mostly looking at laser ablation as at the time I refuse "open" surgery. I will even try gamma knife before traditional surgery. I just want any input from those who are artists (hobby or professional) and have went through any surgery to see how it affected their abilities. Thanks!

I’ve been on a ton of meds

I’ve been on a ton of meds also. I can’t even tell you which ones because I’ve lost track. My worry about medication was the fact that I’d loose musical abilities. My first surgery was an open surgery on my right temporal lobe and it didn’t do a lot to me, musical abilities were still the same. But my second surgery was a laser surgery on the same spot and it did go down a little, but only a little bit. I’m mostly still the same.

This question is really

This question is really specific to the surgery you are having. I had a surgery to remove a vein tangle thing (AVM) from the left side of my brain, and have had some weakness in my right hand, haven't been able to write/draw/shade very smoothly.  I only drew a bit for enjoyment, so it wasn't disastrous. That's why it depends on the area of the brain being operated on.  My surgery was near areas for speech and right-side movement, especially my hand.  Ask your doctor (or have a consultation with a surgeon) and have discussion about risks. One surgeon (of a few i met with) warned me I might have weak/tingly fingers. Ask! Best of luck, and don't be too freaked out, they're all gonna have to say risk of stroke, coma, death, etc...doesn't mean high risk :)Feel good, and keep making art!

I haven't noticed anything

I haven't noticed anything being worse because of the ablation (people have said that I seem better, but that might be because I've been feeling better because so far the surgery has been effective). I can't call myself an artist but I do a lot of writing at work and think my ability to write is just as good. At least I'm not having spells where I suddenly can't remember the next work in the sentence that I was trying to write and then can't remember what I was trying to write.
