Memory Problems with Surgery?

Fri, 11/07/2008 - 09:49
I am scheduled for a left temporal lobectomy on 12/18 and I just had a couple of questions...my dad is afraid that I am going to get amnesia and forget him...I have tried to put his mind at ease saying that it isn't possible, but I don't think I am being very convincing...also, I was wondering if anyone has had any type of emotional disturbances with this surgery?..thanks!

Hi Tripser,

I had a teft temproal lobectomy on 25th July, and it has been a huge success! I haven't noticed any significant memory loss or worsening of my memory. Like Mamasaw, when I came out of surgery my mum dad and boyfriend made sure I knew who they were! and as soon as I knew I think they relaxed! Occasionally I forget the odd thing, but I just keep notes. I've so far been seizure free. It's the best thing I've ever done, and I wish you all the success, you'll be great!!!

I just had the surgery.  It was pretty intense.  I am going off some medicine, klonopin, but they are keeping me on Depakote (500mg) for a while.  The surgery was my only hope because I have tried several different medications and nothing has worked.  I have had seizures for 23 years and things have just recently gotten worse.  I had the depth wires put in 5 places for a week and then they did the surgery for 5 hours on November 5th.  It's going pretty well.  So far I have been seizure free.  That's a miracle.  It is very painful but you will heal quickly.  They say it will take about 6 weeks.  So, it's been 3 weeks for me now.  I don't notice much of a memory loss.  Every once in a while I do have to think about what I'm saying, certain words are hard.  All in all, it's not too bad.  I try to read, talk, etc.  It really is going to be fine.  Good luck!
