Physical activity after surgery?

Mon, 02/05/2007 - 08:36
Greetings, Was wondering what sort of level of physical activity was allowed and how soon after surgery? I had my RTL on Jan 3rd and I was told to avoid strenuous activity for 3 weeks. No lifting, no impact exercises etc... I am now permitted to do treadmill and stationary bike but I'm curious what other people who have been through this were allowed to attempt and when. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Mary

Well, I just had surgery 2 weeks ago and Im told to take it easy for 6-8 weeks. I cant strain myself....or basically carry/lift anything over 8 pounds. I can walk though....its a refreshing thing to do, considering the first week after surgery youre inside alot. So just go out for a nice walk.

Congratulations!!!! I had a LTL on 2/16/04 and have not had one problem since. You do need to take it easy for awhile. I was so glad to be home from the hospital that I did not relax and that was a big mistake. Good luck with everything else! I was very pleased with my surgery and I hope you are also!

Thanks for the info everyone. I appreciate it. I wasn't given any info upon discharge from the hospital other than don't lift anything over 5 pounds. No timeline was given, no other instructions either. Very frustrating. I am usually a very active person and I also have two small children so I found it very difficult not to mention impossible to not do much of anything when I got home. As my doctor put it, it sucks right now because I am still in a lot of pain and I still have a lot of facial swelling to deal with but down the road when we get all of that resoved I will be very happy because we went into this for the right reasons and he thinks eventually I will get the desired results. Seizure free and medication free. Hopefully!
