Absence Seizures (Generalised)

Sun, 08/27/2006 - 21:37
Hi, I'd like to know if anyone suffers from Absence Seizures (Generalised) e.g. Petit Mal and Grand Mal, either from early childhood through to adulthood and whether you have found success or seizure control with any one drug or drugs in combination, prescribed. Also would be interested to know of anyone who has Petit Mal seizures more than the Grand Mal seizures or vice versa. Thank you and I look forward to a response.

sgritchie, My epilepsy didn't start until I was 15. At 16(1975), it was diagnosed as petit mal-generalized. I started out having more grand mal (tonoc clonic-aka-T/C's) than petit mal (absence) along with myoclonic seizures. After being put on Dilantin and Klonopin, the T/C's weren't as often and the absence seemed to increase or I just noticed them more with not having the T/C's as often. In 1989, I was switched to Depakote and Tegretol. From 1989 to November of 2004 it was the magic combination for me. For once in a long, long time I was controlled. Who knows why the magic wore off but it did. The T/C's came back first, followed by the absence seizures. I now have more absence than T/C's, thank goodness - as well as other seizures that weren't there before such as Atonic, Simple, Complex, etc. I'm thankful for the time I had but I'm not one to settle for it and be happy. I want to be there again. Thee are so many medicines and combinations out there. What works for one may not for another. I hope we all find that magic combination! Good Luck! -Spiz

Spiz, Thanks for that. Yes it would be nice to find one drug or a combination of drugs that works for each individual. I don't envy those Neurologists or the patients. Its a hit and miss situation. Why can't we have a natural alternative - its just drugs drugs drugs! Instead of making us better with these drugs they can do the total opposite. Susan.
