Jackie-

I've heard great things about that facility.  I actually looked into going to that University for nursing, but I am here in Arizona for a while.  How are you feeling?

Hi, Aimee.  If you're in nursing, maybe you can get a job at the University of Texas Health Science Center some day.  We'd love to have you in Texas!  How am I feeling?  As far as E is concernced, great.  I've not had a sz since 11/30/92.  Three months after my surgery, I started walking (it was the first time in 13 years I could get out of my house without another adult with me).  It became a daily habit...3 1/2 miles a day, every day, for 10 years.  Then I began to have major pains in my feet, ankles, knees, and elbows.  Arthritis?  I don't think so...it wasn't in my joints.  I was in my mid 40s when the pains started.  This last February, a rheumatologist told me I had ligament damage from the AEDs I had been on for 36 years.  WHAT?  I'd never heard of such.  My teeth are cracking and breaking from Dilantin & other AEDs (I've got 8 crowns & need 2 more).  But LIGAMENT DAMAGE?  You probably already know this, but it was news to me.  She said NOW we know the long-term side effects of some of the meds I began popping in the 80s.  I was very difficult to control (my sz), and would try every new anti-convulsant when it became available.  She said my ligaments never properly formed because I was on AEDs during my formative years.  Then I got out & did hard power walking for 10 years and flat tore my ligaments up.  She said what was going on inside my mouth is going on inside my entire body.  I've also got Osteomalacia from the AEDs.  I'm not telling you all this to whine, but so that others will be careful to drink plenty of milk, take calcium, and consult their neuros for advice about how to avoid this.   I'm not even 50 and have a handicap parking permit because I have to move slower than an 80-year-old.  But it beats being house-bound, unable to drive, and having uncontrollable sz, the way I used to live.  I started some medicine last month to try & reverse the bone loss, but it will take many months to be able to tell if it's working.   Jackie

Hey, Jackie!  I too have had problems with my teeth!!  I was on all of those meds in the early eighties and they did major damage to my mouth.  I have braces on, and when those come off, more work will be done. (Cracked teeth, poor gums, etc.)  I also excercise daily, and only if I actually have a seizure(very rare) does my body start to hurt.  Ligament damage...ouch Jackie.  I will talk to my surgeon about that next week.  Things at Mayo Clinic are good, and we have been very busy with our new surgery candidates.  Take care nd have a great week, email later.   From, Aimee
