Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy

Tue, 02/01/2005 - 00:45

I am looking for some one that has had the VNS implant procedure done.  My family is considering the procedure for my brother and we would like to speak with someone that has had the procedure done and would be willing to share their success or failure with this device.  We have done much research on the web, however most if not all of the information is provided by Cyberonics who sells the device and physicians who perform the procedure.  Of course the information that we are getting from Cyberonics is that it is the miracle cure for seizures and the physicians only know about "studies".  If there is anyone out there that could share, we would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,
Rod

JoAnne. Thanks for the info. I never had any bad side effects from the vns either. My voice would vibrate during stimulation. More than likely I will have my neuro turn it back on in June. I am having seizure and the "all natural route" isn't working for me. I had such bad side effects on all the aeds that I took I don't want to take any more drugs. The whole purpose of the vns was to "if possible" eventually go off all aeds and let the vns control seizure. Well I am not on any meds. I think now would be a good time to test the vns and see what it can do on its own to control the seizure. Sorry it took a few days to get back to you. Blessings. Linda.

Hello- my daughter, age 28, had the VNS surgery about 1 year ago.  Although it has helped w/ control of the seizures- it basically gives you the opportunity with the magnet to try to stop the seizure- she has had sucess with it, but she also has had seizures that she has not been able to stop for whatever reason.  Sometimes, if the seizure comes too fast, she can't get it, sometimes, if the seizure is too strong, she can't stop it.  I would say all in all, she feels in more control of her seizures and her life.  Sorry I can't offer more information for you.  I really think that it depends on each individual person.  Good luck to your brother and your family.  God bless you.

Here is a recent editorial in response to an FDA warning letter submitted to Cyberonics upon inspection of their manufacturing facility in Texas.
