Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy

Tue, 02/01/2005 - 00:45

I am looking for some one that has had the VNS implant procedure done.  My family is considering the procedure for my brother and we would like to speak with someone that has had the procedure done and would be willing to share their success or failure with this device.  We have done much research on the web, however most if not all of the information is provided by Cyberonics who sells the device and physicians who perform the procedure.  Of course the information that we are getting from Cyberonics is that it is the miracle cure for seizures and the physicians only know about "studies".  If there is anyone out there that could share, we would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,
Rod

The doctors have recommended the VNS for me, but i have not decided yet. I have already had 3 brain surgeries and taken over 20 different seizure medications through the years. Last month my wife and i attended a session put on by the makers of the VNS devises, a nurse and a patient who had one installed for few years now. They were really trying to push it, but i feel reluctant.

The reasons are the poor success of my last operation and i also feel reluctant to do it because i help lead the music in the church. I would hate to have to give that up permanently.

You dont have to give up the singing permanently. They give you a magnet to turn on or off. If you wanted to sing, you place the magnet to your chest and that will stop if from turning on.But in my support group are some alternative options too. You might want to check them out. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/ Lisa

Hi there , i had the VNS put in 2 years ago but had it taken out at the end of that year because things were not working at all , the specalist i am under does not believe in VNS anymore and will try everything else that there is . I knew that it did not have a good reputation but because of how uncontrollable my epilepsy is i persuaded my doctor to let me try it but when i had it done for some strange reason 2 days after (roughly) i had it put in my voice cut off totally and it was related to the VNS the doctors had no idea what was wrong it was the first time it had ever happened , it took a few weeks for it to come back properly , it might help some people but it does not cure epilepsy. I know of a few people who have had it taken out , so if i can be anymore help to you then by all means leave me a message . Take care julie x
