pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

As long as I can have children my neurologist has me taking 1mg of folic acid a day just in case I get pregnant. As soon as I told him I was actually trying to get pregnant, he also had me start taking prenatal vitamins. After I got pregnant my OB upped my folic acid to 4mg a day plus a prenatal vitamin. He thought better safe than sorry and it doesn't hurt to take more. -Sarah

Ready your story has given me a lot of hope. I'm so happy to hear Keppra is treating you well through your pregnancy. I can only imagine how scary it is always wondering about the safety and health of you and your baby. All that i have heard from my doctors is that by breastfeeding it will secrete through the breast milk. Just a heads up... goodluck! Kim

Hello everyone - Im pregnant and worried about the medications that I am on for the epilepsy. I am 28 years old and has had epilepsy since I was a teenager. My medications has changes alot throughout the years but about 5 years ago I wanted to be on meds that would be okay for when I decide to start having children. I originally was on depakote and tegretol and my neurologist said that he wanted to switch my meds and wanted to put me on Lamicitil. I was on lamictil only for about a month when I had a seizure so my doctor added in Kepra and now Im on 1000mg of Kepra and 400mg of lamicitil. I havent had a seizure for about 3 years now and the meds are working great for the epilepsy but now Im worried about the pregnancy. I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and I also had a miscarriage about 3 months prior. My OBGYN had to perform a D&C b/c there was no heartbeat. My doctor said that miscarriages are very common and that alot of women have miscarriages before having their first child. Im so worried that maybe the meds that I am on are not good for pregnancy and worry about any abnormalities for my baby to come. Does anybody have any information for me? Grace
