pregnancy and keppra

Tue, 12/27/2005 - 13:01
Hello everyone I am 28 years old, female, with JME. My doctor has switched me from Depakote to Lamictal and now Keppra. I take Keppra 1000mg a day. Is there anyone, who is on Keppra, who is pregnant or who has had a baby. There is a ton of information of Lamictal and pregnancy but not much of Keppra and pregnancy. My husband and I want to start planning for a family, but we are VERY nervous. My ob/gyn put me on a prenatal vitamin and extra folic acid. I would appreciate any information from anyone. -aspepath

I have had epilepsy for nearly 30 years.  I am taking Keppra, but I was pregnant with my daughter using Lamictal.  She was born healthy according to standards.  In fact she is bi-lingual, German and English.  I wait to see if anything will happen with her development, but so far I think she is proceeding ok, if not better than ok.  I had four gran mal seizures when I was pregnant.  That means that she and I were without oxygen for a few seconds and perhaps a minute or so.  I have no idea how she was saved from brain damage (or even I after 30 years).  My husband and I decided ahead of time that we would take a disabled child and love her/him no matter what, so we lived through the pregnancy, but it was psychologically challenging.

I worked a lot of this out in a novel that I just published and it is on Amazon.  It is fictional, but I took a lot of what I learned through what I lived through and what I picked up from other memoirs and wove it into a story. My experiences and those of other women are in the book, but combined in the experience of the main character.  The title is:  A Great Place for a Seizure.
